On Chesil Beach
It's a series of questions, tenderly asked,
Starting with, who is that?
Progressing through, what do you know?
Who are you like? Why do you listen to
that? When can we do this again?
Then: will my family frighten you off? What
do you even see in me? Does it matter that
I can't love this thing you love if I promise
I love you?
Later: Is this too much? Am I crushing you?
Am I too much? Is it alright that I'm afraid?
What does that say about me? Or you?
Or us?
And in the end: how can you not hear the
question I'm yelling at you in the silence?
It's the only one that requires an answer
for us to survive.
